Raspberry Pi 5 - Unofficial PCIe Success - Hacking the Pi5's PCIe into life
In this video I talk through my hardware tinkering to get the Raspberry Pi 5's PCIe connected to something. Thus far, I had only seen Raspberry Pi's boards with their RP2040 and lots of parts on board. My professional experience with PCIe was that it either goes or it really doesn't. I decided to try and make it do something for no reason other than the technical challenge.
To see what I did, check out: github.com/m1geo/Pi5_PCIe
**Note: This project is a reverse engineering - Please wait use the official Raspberry Pi documentation when using the PCIe FPC** : datasheets.raspberrypi.com/pcie/pcie-connector-standard.pdf

Clone PhoneFix Quick 861DW Hot Air Rework Soldering Station Repair - Blower Fan Fault
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.Год назад
This video details the diagnosis and repair of a clone/fake PhoneFix Quick 861DW hot air rework soldering station. Mid-way through soldering, the airflow blower fan (which I usually use at a low speed) suddenly sped to maximum. Returning the handle to the holster to cool down did not stop the fan once cooled as expected, and continued to run at full speed until the mains power was cut. In this ...

This XDT-PA100X by XTD (that's what the silkscreen on the PCB says) is sold as a 100W HF (1.8-30MHz) amplifier. I opted for an IC705 interface, but, that was ignored and I got the generic (maybe Xiegu) interface cable. I had planned to take it out portable tomorrow to use with the IC705, and decided to have a look inside first to check. The amplifier transistors are IRF530N HEXFET PowerMOSFET p...

My analysis of the fan control functionality was a bit off. The unit failed again with the same part dying after a further year. I decided to trace circuit out (see link below) but the basic functionality is that the TL431 (Q2) is driven by a reference from the CPU (pin14) via voltage divider R5/R4. R3 couples this back in to Q2 reference. The cathode of Q2 connects to the base of the TIP122 (Q1). R2 provides some feedback. As can be seen in the schematic snippet below, the TIP122 (Q1) is used as a linear regulator, and thus runs very hot! I have added extra heatsinking! You can get the real version. It is completely different and not a copy of a brandname like most Chinese products. Quick actually designed it themselves and better then most the brandname hot airstations I used over the years even $800 dollars Hakko POS stations. The real one actually has a brushless motor with a completely separate motor controller and wires are thicker and unit properly grounded with even a resistor in ground ESD port. The real one are actually good. I has one for over 4 years and used it daily at shop and had to only replace heater once on it. The second one just bought a couple days ago as found one cheap used but barely as metal on heater still shiny with extra angle and BGA tips. It is definitely legit to my older one as looked inside of course to make sure not a clone. I use a more expensive Weller as couldn't find another Quick 861dw a few months ago as all on eBay and Amazons were fake but actually prefer the Quick as easier to adjust without having to look while looking in microscope. The Weller you have to set profiles and no auto shutoff as you have to push button in handle. The Weller does have ramp up and down profiles you can set and good performance but the quick I like better as buttons placement and auto cutoff when in stand. When you look for the real one they are going to be about $330 new and will have the Quick logo on front no other branding. Plus, the rear will have mounting spots you notice for the EMI filter. Then, likely it is real.

There is a lot of who care's.. they have hats for everything you just did with PCI express slot.. sure the slots faster than the hats but hardware wise you can use hats for the exact same functionality!! Let us know when you have a GTX 1650ti or a GTX 1080ti or a RTX A2000 working on pi5 that actually outputs video and uses 3D acceleration and gsync ext.. so we only really want to add dedicated GPU to the pi5 that is what we want to make a pi5 a viable replacement for a low power consumption extra tiny form factor build.. till then i don't care about a PCI express network card or PCI express nvme card that's just boring and have work arounds for both of these card.. p.o.e network hats 2.5gig which is plenty sound and mic is already on the pi5 and is good enough to not need to use PCI express slot for sound or game port or something else similar.. we need GPU horse power thats it nothing else matters right now.

I have no words to describe my indignation. "Hecklers" like you give all other "Hecklers" the impression that design specs are written just for fun and PCB design is not a serious profession, just a foolish waste of time. If anyone can just solder a few wires anywhere and get high-speed data rates without any problems, why bother with micrometer-precise specifications for differential high-speed transmission lines and connections. Nobody needs it. After 40 hours of messing around, you go to a real engineer and throw him 5 dollars to do the work for you. That's all it's worth, the bit of soldering. Right?

Sure, if you like. 😂 I have a PhD in electronic engineering, and work in PCB design for a large, well known company - you've certainly used our work. Take your 'zero subscribers' troll account and go annoy someone else!

@@m1geo 😂 You are so laughable. All the users showing positive reactions to your video are just like you, bunglers! Anyone with serious interest could learn PCB design if they stick to the literature and reputable electronics channels that don't put on a "show" to present botches and fabricate "fake" functionality.

That test board is a beautiful abomination; I love it. I'm surprised you've had to reverse engineer the connector; has the foundation not made schematics/pinouts for it publicly available??

My sound card (SB1040) does that PCIe to PCI workaround. That's how I found out my motherboard (SuperMicro X9DRH-7F) cucked some slots with limited bus indexes. Sound card needs 2 indexes.

Interesting. Wasn't something I was aware of. Seems like most USB2 cards are like this!?

I can't say otherwise. Only USB 2 cards I've seen have been PCI, and only USB 3 cards I've seen have been PCIe. I've only owned one USB 3 card, and it doesn't seem to require anything extra, no conversion etc. Orico branded VIA controller that doesn't require drivers to work, even installed Windows 10 with it on my X79 era server. it doesn't handle some things well, but for $13...
